How to Make Realistic Resolutions that Stick!

I hope you’re in the mood for some motivation because I want to get you fired up to make realistic resolutions for this new year that actually stick!

For many people, it’s the same pattern every year. Just before the new year, they’re SO excited for a fresh start. They make resolutions that they swear they’ll stick to. They promise themselves that this year will be different.

The new year starts, and in no time at all (typically less than TWO WEEKS!) the motivation fades, excuses run rampant, and their goals become a thing of the past. This is because we set too many goals all at once and collapse under the pressure, or we set unrealistic goals and collapse under the pressure (see the pattern?). Ack! I know that’s harsh, but you want me to tell you the truth right?

I see with great clarity exactly how you can make yours work for you… and it all comes down to one simple (but important!) question.

Is this how I want to show up in the world?

Instead of telling yourself, ‘I’m going to organize my Inbox‘, ‘I’m going to lose 30 pounds’, ‘I’m going to stop eating sugar’, ‘I’m going to play more’, ‘I’m going to read 50 books this year’, whatever your goals are… clear the noise and ask yourself: “Is this how I want to show up in the world?”

Holy cow is that a powerful question! I started asking myself that when I was 16 years old and want to tell you it is the single reason I have built the life I’m so proud of today.

When you see those emails piling up, reaching for that milkshake, or skipping workouts, ask yourself: “Is this how I want to show up in the world?”

You see, there’s a whole different type of accountability that occurs with this question. It’s soul accountability and you can’t deny your truth.

Now what….?

I urge you to sit with this message for a little bit before you zip off to do something else.

Really consider the resolutions/goals you’ve set for yourself (large or small!) and contemplate if there’s anything you can adjust to reduce the pressure. Ask yourself how you want to show up in the world. Aim to live your truth!

What do you think? Do you approach your goals in a way that empowers you or stresses you out? And if you’re stressed out, how are you going to change that? 🙂

xoxo,
Amber Vilhauer
